Next week we have Rita B entertaining us, preceded by a buffet at the start of the evening. Looking further forward we will be having a Bangers and Mash event early November and then starting the run up to Christmas. Where does the year go?
In September, Lily Lawrence entertained us by ‘Dancing Through the Decades’. As a professional ballet and modern dance performer she was able to show various dances. She even got a couple of our owners dancing. A wonderful event truly enjoyed by all.

The sale of apartments is going extremely well with eight completing to date and a further two ‘under offer’. All the new owners have settled in well, with many attending the regular monthly events hosted by Alston Court.
Our August event was the Annual ‘Pimm's on the Patio’. Owners enjoyed glorious weather that afternoon. Apart from Pimm's, non-alcoholic Summer Surprise and juices were available. A relaxing afternoon for all at Alston.
Owners gathered for a lovely Afternoon Tea with a good assortment of finger sandwiches, home made scones, cream and Tiptree jams with yet more cups of tea. Another event at enjoyed by all.
Owners enjoyed a Strawberry Tea with strawberries and cream, home-made scones, lashings of clotted cream, jam and plenty of cups of tea. A new favourite at Alston Court.
Alston Court was looking as good as new ready for Christmas.
The Owners enjoyed many social events including a carol concert, a visit from St Helens Catholic Primary School Choir, an Owners Christmas party and a carol service. Regular social activities include a monthly Whist Drive and a quiz night. The external redecoration of Alston Court is going well. The exterior render has been cleaned. The balcony handrails have been repaired and repainted a rich terracotta. With the white ceilings and newly painted doors the property is being restored to its former glory.
The picture shows the rear of the block during the cleaning process. That on the left has been cleaned, centre part is being cleaned and the right still to be done. The Rock and Roll night went very well and the next event is going to be a Strawberry Tea in a couple of weeks and then ‘Pimm’s on the Patio’ in August. Last year more than 30 owners and guests attended each of these events.
Various contractors are visiting Alston Court in preparation of the external redecoration. All the render and some brickwork is to be cleaned, the rainwater goods to be renewed, external walkways to be painted and wooden balcony rails replaced. It will mean that the Court will be covered in scaffolding for a period but the outside will be pristine when the work is finished.
Spring is on its way and this year the daffodils were still out when the wallflowers started to bloom. It is good to see the garden in colour again.
We have taken the opportunity of cleaning and sealing all the block paving in the car park and renewing the parking bay markings. The town houses on the old St Helen’s School site are nearly complete and apparently selling for £675,000. Apartment sales have been quite quiet as no properties have come on the market apart from those with one bedroom. I therefore have only one bedroom properties available. The waiting list for two bedroom properties is continuing to grow and I am sure any such properties will not be on the market long. I strongly recommend anyone interested to contact me so I can record their details appropriately. The events recently held include a buffet followed by entertainment when 22 owners and guests attended and had an enjoyable time. Last week 31 owners and guests attended an afternoon tea with a table magician conjuring up an entertaining afternoon. Coming up in April is our St George’s Day Fish and Chip Supper and in May a buffet following by a group called ‘Lets Rock and Roll’. A fashion show has been arranged in June together with a strawberry Tea. The redecoration of the ground floor and communal areas is now complete. Our new look lounge (see picture below) is already getting a lot of compliments.
Over the coming weeks we have many varied events which include
Unfortunately we currently have no apartments for sale and the waiting list is growing which proves the popularity of Alston Court. Over the next few months however some of our empty apartment will be coming up for sale so I encourage all potential buyers to regularly look at this website. The redecoration of the ground floor areas is about to start. June will be an interesting time with the logistics of getting the lounge, dining room, hobbies room, office and main ground floor corridor all being repainted, wallpapered and new carpet being laid.
Our front garden again looked a treat and the wisteria in the back garden has come into full bloom. Recent afternoon tea and St George’s Day fish and chip supper both went well and they were both lovely social events. We are hoping to arrange another afternoon tea during June and a Ukulele band is coming in July. We have also arranged for a ‘Staying Steady’ class to be run at Alston Court from early June for 16 weeks. This class is to help those that have had a fall or are unsteady on their feet to take part in gentle exercises under the supervision of an expert trainer from Southend Council. A brand new local Sainsbury's is nearly ready to open nearby Alston Court.
The final decision regarding the new wallpapers and carpet in the lounge, dining room, hobbies room and ground floor corridor will be made shortly. The work will commence in Spring 2016, so watch this space! Over the coming months we have an afternoon tea, quiz nights and buffets with evening entertainment. We also have the lighting of the Christmas tree celebration and a Christmas party. Hopefully the Children from a local School will be visiting to sing Christmas carols. In June we had an open day which was well attended and plenty of interest was shown. At one time we only had two apartments left for sale but it is now back up to five.
Work has commenced on the site just round the corner from us and a new Sainsbury’s local should be open in the autumn. An interior designer has met with the redecoration committee so things are moving forward in that respect. Installation of a further ten automatic opener doors to ease access throughout the Court will occur during September or October. Recent events included a Strawberry Tea, a Rock and Roll night, a U3A singing group and later this month our annual Pimms on the Patio. Spring has brought a wonderful display of colour to the gardens. Social events are in full swing with a fish and chip supper planned for St Georges Day. New Owners have been warmly welcomed and enjoying their new lifestyle. The Board are considering proposals for the re-decoration of the communal areas in the next financial year.
